Atrophy

Atrophy

Atrophy is a Multimedia work for Video, Audio Track and a diverse group of musicians including woodwinds, strings, and jazz drums. This work was composed over a period of roughly a year, and serves as the centre piece for my graduating composition recital at Brandon University. The impetus for this work grew out of a program I did in the summer of 2016, called 'A Wild Studio'. The program consisted of four compacted days of lectures, artistic show and tells, and sound walks on the theme of 'environmentally-responsive creative research'. The woodwind themes I composed, and field recordings I collected during this workshop ultimately became the basis of the work. I have since added soundscapes generated by the TaoMix App to recapture the ambience of the Riding Mountain region. The musical component of the work relies heavily on the Audio Track for atmosphere. Beginning with a fundamental E drone whose overtone structure derives from my interpretation of Yeats' cosmology, the audio track unfolds into richer multitrack harmonies. The woodwinds appear several times, scattered at first, but slowly coalescing into a minimalist flow reminiscent of Philip Glass. The improvisatory drum interjections and insistent low strings with their dance-like figure represent fragments of the urbanity of which the protagonist craves. The final product is a detached, yet personal rumination on environmental decay and sustainability in the face of human ecological exploitation. The decay of a human mind is directly contrasted with our decaying natural landscape. However, in nature all decay leads to creation, and life will always return from death, the circle completed.
